Introduction
Target Value Design (TVD), the process of designing towards a budget without sacrificing quality or extending schedules, is increasingly popular with owners. TVD works when everyone involved in a project is part of the process. It requires true collaboration, transparency, rapid estimating, and rapid decision-making.

Atrium Health, a non-profit health organization based in Charlotte, North Carolina, employed TVD to build a new rehabilitation hospital and acute care bed tower at the Atrium Carolinas Medical Center (CMC) campus. Atrium awarded the $650M project to DPR Rodgers (a joint venture between DPR Construction and Rodgers Builders), NBBJ, and WSP. To manage the projects, Stantec was selected to augment Atrium’s in-house staff.

Preconstruction planning for the two projects was handled separately. The team tackled the $100M rehab hospital first. From March to December 2020, approximately 30 people from multiple cluster groups collaborated towards the goal. They used their existing tools to track their project costs, budget, and timelines as they had done with other projects in the past.

“Tracking decisions for the rehabilitation hospital quickly became chaotic,” said Melanie Moreschi, Preconstruction Manager for DPR Rodgers. “Due to having so many users in the same tracking log, it was too easy for files to be overwritten, causing new items to be lost or even to have two copies of the same file running simultaneously. Furthermore, it was challenging to track items affecting multiple building systems such as structure, skin, mechanical and electrical into separate project clusters.”

DPR Rodgers had to ensure that the TVD process was smoother for the CMC bed tower project. They had to find an alternative — and fast.

Project Intro:

The Koppel Bridge project was a $27 Million effort to replace the previous bridge. TyBOT performed bulk tying operations on this project in April of 2019 to assist the crews of Brayman Construction Corporation. The Koppel Bridge is located in rural Western Pennsylvania and serves as a crucial link between the towns of Koppel, and Ellwood City. It is a 4-span bridge that is 43 feet wide and 1,240 feet long. The new Koppel bridge opened in October of 2019. 

Role in Project:

TyBOT® is an autonomous rebar tying robot that ties up to 1,000 intersections an hour. TyBOT deploys to any job site that has screed rails in place and will do the work of an average crew. TyBOT easily deploys anywhere in the country to work on horizontal reinforcing steel installation projects. TyBOT performed the bulk tie portion of the Koppel Bridge deck reinforcing steel installation for two out of the four spans of the bridge.

Description of Project:

The Koppel Bridge project, located in Koppel, PA, began in January 2017 and opened to traffic in October 2019. The bridge carries two 12 ft travel lanes and 8 ft shoulders. The deck of the Koppel Bridge consists of 1 million pounds of rebar and 6,000 cubic yards of concrete. The structural steel supporting the deck weighs approximately 4.3 million pounds.

Brayman Construction Corporation (BCC) meticulously recorded production data for the deck reinforcing steel installation of the project so that this case study could provide meaningful results. While self-performing the rebar installation on two spans that did not utilize TyBot, BCC expended 20% of their total manhours on the bulk tie sub-activity that TyBOT would perform on the other two spans.

When TyBOT executed the bulk tie on these two spans, the data showed that BCC not only saved the expected 20% of manhours for bulk tying but also saved another 14% for a total savings of 34% of their budgeted manhours. These additional savings was attributed to a couple of different factors.

BCC chose to augment their deck rebar crew with TyBOT meaning they did not reduce the level of manpower performing the installation. Not having to perform the 

bulk tie sub-activity allowed the crew to focus manual efforts on the remaining sub-activities associated with deck rebar installation. This allowed these activities such as carrying and placing the rebar to occur faster and more efficiently.

The use of TyBOT also prompted the operations team to perform more pre-planning of the deck rebar work to ensure the time TyBOT was waiting on placed rebar to tie was minimized. Typically, deck rebar work planning is done in the field where the crew often reacts to the daily changes and challenges that are frequent on construction projects. When using TyBOT, the manual labor was very focused on planning the work to make sure that “the robot didn’t catch up to them”. This created a sense of competition between the robotic TyBOT and the crew, pushing the work along faster.

With BCC augmenting their crew with TyBOT, the project realized both a 34% manhour savings and a 34% savings in the duration of the work. Experiencing schedule and productivity improvements that result in manhour savings is a great example of the power of utilizing robots in construction. With widespread shortages in skilled labor, using TyBot to augment and not replace the rebar crew is the best way to accelerate projects, meet tough schedule constraints, and best utilize the skills of workers.

Ultimately the focus was to create a piece of furniture that embodies an optimal balance of delicateness in form and strength in dentistry. As a provider of facility management solutions, Keßler Solutions has depended on the integration of CAD drawings and databases for more than 20 years. CAD plans are linked to databases and processes in FAMOS, Keßler’s GEFMA-certified computer-aided facility management (CAFM) software, by ARES Commander. This allows for bidirectional data sharing, informative visuals, excellent data quality, and FM process integration.

Graebert and Keßler are collaborating to expand this technology with strong, market-oriented CAD solutions. The Web-CAD, an integrated CAD core for the FAMOS WebPortal from Keßler, was built on the basis of ARES Kudo in a relatively short development period. This means that a CAD viewer is now available for users working on mobile devices, enabling them to work as they normally do, without having to learn anything new. This makes it easier to integrate CAD data into the database — for example, by comparing different planning stages on the construction site. The Web-CAD is ideal for everyday usage, such as on building sites (construction progress/status documentation) or in facility management procedures (occupation, relocation, inventory, events).

The Web-CAD, an integrated CAD core for the FAMOS WebPortal from Keßler, was built on the basis of ARES Kudo in a relatively short development period.

The Challenge: Increased Data Required for Design of More Resilient Structures

An increasing number of Aurecon’s clients are following lessons learned from the Canterbury Earthquakes. They are requesting resilient structures in order to facilitate post-earthquake operations of their businesses.

In response, Aurecon designs buildings that employ the most effective known seismic mitigation technologies such as sliding hinge joints for low damage connections and Ringfeder friction springs that cushion seismic vibrations. These technologies allow a building to move during a seismic event with a minimum amount of damage to the building’s structural and architectural elements.

Data Grows in Volume and Complexity

Aurecon Sliding Hinge JointClinton Maulder, Associate – Buildings, Aurecon has needed a way to get data from an engineering spreadsheet into the Revit model without having to transfer it over manually. In one project, just one of many elements, sliding hinge joints – nine or 10 different ones – had to be tabulated. Standard detail tables had to be compiled. Engineering loads needed to be input into piling schedules; plate, bolt, and pre-stressing configurations for Ringfeder connections needed to be tabulated.

Conclusion

In addition to using Ideate BIMLink for this seismic work, it has also recently been implemented to coordinate sheet and drafting information across (65) emergency response service departments, with the work being done by Aurecon’s engineers at three different New Zealand locations. Customize and share Autodesk® Revit® Toolbars in two clicks!  

NonicaTab PRO creates a new Revit toolbar with 3 profiles of 12 buttons each, easy to customize with our ready-to-use buttons (or Dynamo scripts) and animated icons. Profiles (Default, Beta, and Gamma) can be easily switched at runtime to use different sets of buttons. You will have independent sets of buttons for each Revit version!

Click and go! Choose a set of buttons from our library and shape it! Ready-to-use buttons include Color Elements by Par. Value, Create Wall Finish/Skirting, Align Tags, To 3D View with Section Box, and much more. NonicaTab PRO runs the command/script in the background and pops up input windows such as Data Shapes or our Input window.

The PRO version also allows you to import and export your NonicaTab PRO toolbars and share them easily. A file (.nonica/.ntab) will be created in your selected location which you can use to import your set of buttons into any other computer with NonicaTab PRO. Including packages read below!

Every time you run a NonicaTab button, the execution data is gathered on your computer. Go to Settings to visualize how your buttons are being run with our built-in interactive graphs. You can also select datasets of your connected toolbars and detect who and how many times your buttons are run.

Always the latest version! Use Connect in Settings to automate your deployments:
  Connect the target computers, in which you want to deploy your toolbars automatically, to a file in a shared location (Dropbox, OneDrive).
  Every time you export from your computer and overwrite the connected file, this will be detected by target computers when executing scripts, and all buttons, icons, packages, keyboard shortcuts, and scheduling settings will be updated AUTOMATICALLY.
  Every time you update a deployed toolbar, a record with the changes will be stored in the .nonica file. When deployed toolbars are automatically updated, users will be shown this data record, so they are aware of the changes.

Hotkeys, Playlists, and Scheduling settings are now also available!

Hotkeys: Set a keyboard shortcut to run your buttons/playlists without even looking for the button.
Playlists: Create a list of buttons/scripts that would be run one after the other.
Scheduler: Auto-run a playlist of buttons every X minutes or quickly set a button to be run every time after you open, save, sync, print your project, or load a Revit family. You can do so in two clicks! 
  

What about the Dynamo packages? FORGET ABOUT THEM! If your buttons are running well on your PC, they will run well on the importing computer. When you export your toolbars, NonicaTab PRO detects all the installed Dynamo packages required to run the scripts in your toolbars and they will be imported together with your toolbar. Only available for Dynamo scripts created from Revit 2020 or later versions and Dynamo 2.3 or later versions.
 

This new release also includes Input Detector! If you want NonicaTab PRO to ask for input values before executing your button, you only need to set the node as "Is Input". Inputs are ordered alphabetically by name and number. You can now also freeze or unfreeze nodes directly from Revit!

If you prefer to set up your own icons and scripts, the PRO version also has some features that you will love;

Refresh All. Update all Dynamo scripts in your NonicaTab buttons in one click. All you need to do is keep your modified Dynamo script in the same location with the same name.
Icons. Select any jpg/png/gif image and it will automatically be converted and included in your NonicaTab button.
